The payout curve is the strategy
A big best ball tournament is structurally a GPP: an enormous field, an entry fee, and a payout curve where first place takes a life-changing slice and most of the money sits in the top handful of finishers. In that shape of contest, the roster with the best average season is not the goal. The goal is the roster with a live path to the best season — especially in the playoff weeks, when a few thousand survivors compete winner-take-most.
Everything below follows from that one fact. If the payout curve pays ceilings, draft for ceilings.
Stacking: making your big weeks arrive together
Stacking a quarterback with his own receivers isn't a style choice — it's arithmetic. When the QB throws for four touchdowns, somebody on his team caught them. Pairing them means your roster's spike weeks synchronize: the same play scores twice on your team.
Public correlation studies consistently put a QB and his top receiver around +0.3 to +0.5 week-to-week — the strongest positive link in fantasy. Correlation doesn't change your roster's average season by a single point. It widens the distribution: more disaster weeks, more slate-breaking weeks. In a top-heavy tournament, that trade is the whole game.
The same logic extends past the primary stack: a bring-back from the opposing offense turns "my stack hits" into "the game shoots out," and a late-season playoff stack — teammates and opponents who collide in Weeks 15–17 — concentrates your ceiling exactly where the tournament pays it. Uncorrelated rosters of "good picks" quietly optimize for the average season the payout curve ignores.
Ceilings are not projections
Player seasons — and player weeks — are right-skewed: a long floor of ordinary games, a thin tail of explosions. Two players with the same ADP and the same projection can carry completely different tails, and the tail is what advances you. Draft-season translation: when two picks are close, take the one whose best case is bigger, and take him alongside the teammates who make that best case land in one week.
The crowd tax follows you here too
One more GPP force operates in best ball, and almost nobody prices it: duplication. Hundreds of thousands of drafters share the same ADP sheet and the same draft-room defaults, so consensus builds — same anchor RB, same "value" QB tier, same popular late stack — have many near-twins in the field. When that build's dream season happens, it happens for all of them, and they split the top of the payout curve.
