Leverage: the only stat that prices the crowd

Projection tells you what a player might score. Ownership tells you what the field paid for him. Leverage is the gap between the two — and in tournaments, the gap is where all the money lives.

Ownership is a price

In a cash game, nobody cares who else rosters your players — you just need to beat the median. A GPP is a different animal: you're paid by your rank against the field, in a payout curve where the top 1% of finishers take most of the pool. That changes what a player is worth.

Think of projected ownership as the market price of a player's upside. A 40%-owned stud is expensive in a way that has nothing to do with his salary: when he hits, almost half the contest moves up the leaderboard with you. Your lineup scored more, but so did everyone's. Rank — the thing you're actually paid on — barely improved.

Leverage is not contrarianism

The word gets abused, so let's define it. Leverage is exposure the field underprices — rostering an outcome at a higher rate than the field does, in a spot where that outcome has a real chance to decide the tournament. Two things have to be true at once:

  • The player (or stack) has a live ceiling — a realistic path to a slate-breaking score, which is what tops GPP leaderboards.
  • The field's ownership underweights that ceiling — usually because projections are medians, and the crowd shops on medians.

Fading a great play purely because it's popular fails the first test: you give up more win probability than the ownership discount refunds. Leverage isn't being different for its own sake. It's being different where the price is wrong.

The receipt: chalk really does bleed ROI

Among lineups with similar projected scores, the higher-ownership ones earn lower ROI. In a recent 50,000-sim run, the top projection tier's low-owned third earned +62% ROI against −21% for its high-owned third — same points, worse payday. The crowd tax and the dupe tax, priced in.

Two mechanisms drive it. First, shared upside: chalk moving the whole field together compresses your rank gains. Second, duplication: the chalkiest complete builds appear dozens or hundreds of times and split what they win. Ceilings, not medians

Leverage hunting starts with a modeling decision most tools skip: player outcomes are not bell curves. Real fantasy scoring is right-skewed — a long floor of quiet games and a tail of explosions — and the tail is what wins tournaments. A player projected for 12 with a live 35-point tail is a fundamentally different asset than a player projected for 14 who tops out at 22, even though the "projection" column ranks them backwards.
